What kind of public health advocacy capacity and activities already exist in each state? How might these be strengthened?

In 2023, the Network for Public Health Law, the CDC Foundation, and the deBeaumont Foundation commissioned a study of public health advocacy capacity across all 50 states and Washintgton, D.C. The full report summarizes findings from our assessments between March and June 2023 and can be found here.

In 2024, Act for Public Health provided funding for the completion and updating of each state scan. 

Each state scan is a high-level snapshot of public health advocacy in the state and is not intended to be a comprehensive assessment. Respondents included state and local health department representatives, elected officials, lobbyists, and partners in other sectors and organizations, although the specific type of respondent was different in each state.  

We hope this scan serves as a springboard for advocates and funders to enhance their ability to advocate for the public’s health in their states.
